Could we please explicitly allow the discussion of cheese pretty please? It would be a great way to distinguish ourselves from the other side.
All my statements in this forum are just an opinion and should not be taken for granted.

Cheese as in "corniness" or cheese as in the stuff that's clogging my arteries?
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=cheesy

Personally I'd like to be much less formal over here, however I would like for us to generally stay on topic.

But maybe we could have an Off-Topic section just for fun stuff?

Yes please! If that means I won't have to skip over discussions about cheese in the main threads, that would be welcome.

I've tried skipping over small rivers in the hills of Scotland, but I've never tried skipping over cheese. 8-)

At different times in my life I have invested pretty heavily both my time and emotional energy with hypertalk like languages, and implementatons like LiveCode. Although, I don't use it like before, I have followed the ups and downs of LiveCode and SuperCard (and for a short time Rodeo) with great interest while remaining detached. (If that makes any sense?)

I wish the board well and will give my opinion and input as time permits!
Welcome Susan, with everything that's going on I hadn't seen this comment until now, please do stop by whenever!
I know what you mean, I've been in an on again / off again relationship with Hyper xTalk things for about 35 years (so pretty much from the beginning). A bumpy ride for sure!
Rodeo? Is that an xTalk I don't know of? Search turned up this article, it looks a bit xTalk-like but it's Python.

Thanks for the welcome!

Around 2010 a couple of Revolution/xTalk luminaries developed an xTalk that worked on the cloud. Pretty cool stuff, especially for the time, but if I remember correctly there was a falling out with Runtime Revolution because of licensing issues. As far as I know, except for a couple of hints in the official forums, most traces of it has been expunged from memory.

Thanks! I'm interested in all of the little pieces of xTalk wreckage history. I'm thinking of writing something like a historical essay when things settle down later!

Rodeo was a service for creating web apps, made by the great Jerry Daniels and Sarah Reichelt. It was originally built with LiveCode (then "Revolution"), and though it competed with LiveCode and LC's proprietary license prohibits competing use, LC CEO Kevin Miller granted the project an exception given Jerry's long-time participation in the LC community as a fan and tool maker, and Rodeo's potential for further evangelizing the LC language.

The project's transition from LC to PHP was a technical one, discussed in this long thread on the use-livecode list from August 2010:
http://lists.runrev.com/pipermail/use-l ... 43843.html

Ultimately the thread showed the difficulties of attempting to run a CPU-intensive multi-user shared hosting service from within a single account on a shared hosting service (the famous "noisy neighbor" problem). As is often the case, Andre Garzia's analysis in that thread was especially helpful.

They re-implemented it in PHP and moved the service to a configuration more suitable for its load, but what became of it beyond that I don't know other than that it appears to have been discontinued some time after that transition.

All posts to the use-livecode list and the LC forums remain in place, and Jerry and Sarah remained welcome to participate in LC venues. AFAIK nothing has been removed, no accounts restricted. The only limitation was first raised by LC user Jeffrey Massung on the use-livecode list, noting the volume of emails promoting Rodeo on the LC list and asking if the project could establish its own communications channels. Kevin agreed, and I believe it may be in the thread I linked to where Kevin asked Jerry to not use the LiveCode list to promote his competing service. By that time Rodeo already had its own forums in place, so that request was easily met.

I haven't spoken with Jerry or Sarah in some years, but I do enjoy following Jerry on LinkedIn, where he regularly posts links to a podcast he does with his brother. Jerry's a great guy with tons of experience in xTalk and beyond, a good connection to make on LinkedIn if you enjoy that platform.

Right. I haven't talked with Jerry in a few years now, but he certainly deserves his place in LC history.

Well, xTalk History is jolly good, but I wonder if "xTalk Future" is ONLY in the ever-so slightly sweaty paws of Kev and Co.

SuperCard have decided to commit Suttee by doing 2 silly things:

1. Blaming Apple [which, even if true, is not going to do any good at all as Apple never takes prisoners] for dropping 32-bit.

[This is almost as pathetic as

1.1. My installation of Debian 11 XFCE 32-bit on my Dad's old laptop: works wonderfully, but . . .

1.2. Expecting customers and potential customers to CARE about the fact that the SuperCard people feel that Apple have shafted them.]

2. NOT pulling their collective finger out and developing a 64-bit version.

And, the 3rd silly thing:

3. Macintosh only, when we all know WHICH OS has the major market share.

disnae wark: and there I was (late, very late, to the party, as usual) hoping to play around with the thing.

Mind you, the ONLY time I sat on a horse (when I was 4 years old) I wet my pants: so, maybe, NO. 8-)

The BIG Q might be whether these are the same people, who, having got 'Kevved' [alternative verb to Steved] went off and:

That appears to be unrelated to Jerry and Sarah's project.

Rodeo is a common term in the States. There are likely several projects using that name.

Have you ever considered learning the details about any of the things you cast sweeping judgement on?

I started my business making add-ons for SC, was an advisor with Allegiant when they owned it, and am friends with its inventor Bill Appleton, its original publisher Charlie Jackson, key Allegiant engineer Christopher Watson, and the current dev lead and co-owner Mark Lucas is a dear friend for 30 years.

If you bring questions I can probably answer them.

If you bring judgey dismissal all I have for you is eye rolls.

My assessment of SuperCard is based on what is written on their website.

Can you help me find the URL to the page where they describe themselves as silly, shortsighted, lazy, and burning themselves on their husband's bed?

If you're going to express opinions at least show the integrity to own them.
