Copying Functionality.

Post by richmond62 »

As far as I understand things FUNCTIONALITY cannot be copyrighted.

One of my hobbies is downloading various silly computer games and attempting to remake them, or something very like them in LiveCode:
and that is as far as I go; they stay on one of my backup disks in case I need to refer back to them re any techniques I worked out during the exercise.

I am in the process of downloading the DEMO here:

Are you expressing intent to copy Tom's design work?

There are of course many legal ways to lift the fruits of others' design labors, but few tasteful ones.

Why not just contact Tom and request an EDU discount? It'll save you tremendous time, and make Tom happy to have the opportunity to support education. With his young daughter he has a strong commitment to doing what he can to see eager minds thrive. He's also a darn nice guy and excellent company, you'll enjoy getting to know him.

No, I do not want to copy Tom's work, and I very much doubt that should I want to my programming skills are anywhere near it.

Simply that Tom's work put me in mind of copying functionality.

I'm not very familiar with Tom's AppStarter work (although he certainly seems like a nice enough fellow), but the concept of using a template (starter stack) isn't at all a unique idea.

In fact that's one of the main use cases I had in mind for that StackML I was experimenting with months ago while working a "revTools" replacement stack that uses scalable graphics. (FYI: revTools is already a graphical script-only stack that creates its UI in memory when the stack is loaded.)

I'd certainly like to have template stacks/files included in the IDE, beyond picking from a menu of stack/card sizes, particularly for the currently-devoid-of-options HTML5 deploy, since you're likely to need bits of JavaScript added into the deployments html page, like to communicate browser events to the engine ("resize" window event for example).

Another template I'd like to see is an option for macOS to build as a 'background' app, for things like sytem menubar apps (a use for the IDE inclusion of Trevor Devore's Builder Extension for building those menubar menus) where you don't want the app's icon to display in the macOS Dock at all, which is just a small difference only in the deployed mac apps info.plist file.
