HyperSense (NeXT) and Senstalk (Eggplant)

Post by OpenXTalkPaul »

This is another implementation I don't know much about and have never used.

SenseTalk began life as the language of a HyperCard clone for NeXT (Steve Job's other computer company) called HyperSense.
It's now part of Eggplant:

Since their wordpress homepage violates the 'show don't tell' rule and their corporate homepage locks the application behind a sign up for demonstration registration.

Here's a video with Block programming, you're favorite.

They were acquired by Keysight Technologies...

Two details I found especially interesting about Eggplant:

1. The acquisition by Keysight last year was valued at $330 million.

2. Eggplant had apparently been previously acquired by the Carlyle Group.

Eggplant's early pivot from general-purpose xTalk to specialized testing automation tool was far more lucrative for Mr Simons than I'd known.

Congrats to Simons, but I'm curious what odd role-of-the-dice brought him into the fold with such a famous corner of the military-industrial complex.

Cool, there's also their scripting dictionary available to look at on one of their web sites.

For the record, I'm not at all against the Code-Block programming paradigm.
I've played around with PureData for live-coding musical fun for example, and have used similar for automation workflows in production environments (i.e. my day job has Automation Engine, PDF based workflows that are built with a code-blocks paradigm)

I'm particularly not at all against that paradigm if the code block's underlying code is an easy to read and understand xTalk script!

I just think that the people selling that paradigm as "No Code" app building may be engaging in some false advertising.

I'm not at all against the Code-Block programming paradigm.
Nor am I as such.

What I am against is the theory that it is a useful way to get young people prepared for
more traditional programming languages.
