A Warning from Pearson Longman

Post by richmond62 »

I have just 'converted' my ESL school to 'English Code', a series of ESL books for Primary children.

Having, until yesterday, bundled resources at the back og the Class Books and the Workbooks as CD-ROMS (Not having worked out that most computers have had no CD drives for 7-8 years!), Pearson Longman have decided to bung all the resources online behind 'magic' codes inwith the textbooks, so children can access them directly.

1. The average 7-8 year old hasn't a clue about how to do this.

2. 'Mama and Tatko' are generally monoglot Bulgarians who, while having worked out that if their kids grow up speaking only a language spoken by 7 million people their career choices will be severely limited, cannot understand either the instructions in the books, or how to ket kiddo working with the resources online.

So . . . Richmond gets a load of carpal tunnel syndrome downloading everything to bung on USB drives for the kiddos.

BUT, this is NOT my point here.

What IS my point is how the 'clever' folks at Pearson Longman have made things just about as unintuitive as they could re navigating around these resources, and that should be used and learnt from as a deadly warning for anyone who wants to get into the same sort of game.

So: Let's begin:

Having logged into the Pearson Longman 'Portal' (love that cutesy word which will mean NOTHING to 7-8 year old learners of English as a Second Language), with the code inside the front cover of each text book ('scratch-and-sniff'), one is greeted with this sort of thing:

As a teacher I have about 10 resources: obviously I am only showing one in the screen shot.

Clicking on a resource (In this case, Level 5) one gets this page:

Those icons have NO tool tips . . .

I wonder what the point of MY HOMEWORK actually is:

Guaranteed to confuse children to whom their teacher HAS given homework.

The MY SCHOOL icon leads us here:

I cannot see any obvious connexion between MY SCHOOL and a load of Audio files.

Clicking on 'Audio' one gets this:

What is NOT pointed out is that the SONGS are numbered in sequence with the CLASS AUDIO, so a child has to know that and know where to fit each song in the sequence of the CLASS AUDIO files.

Clicking on CLASS AUDIO results in what looks like a fairly straightforward menu:

Where each of those icons leads to the AUDIO FILES for each Unit:

The hiatus comes when one finishes a unit:

Oh, and while I'm here, I would like to know what that carat ^ is for, as clicking SHIFT-6 on my keyboard does nothing whatsoever.

A mouseClick on the 'BACK' button does NOT take one back to where one would expect to be taken:

No, No, No: I will NOT continue (as for one thing I have to download all those files), but also as it can already be seen that the Pearson Longman people have got a bloody bad interface designer who hasn't given a moment's thought to affordances, user-response, or much else.

The lesson that can be learnt from this is true both for online and offline interface design.

A last blast:

As a 62 year old the TOTALLY BLANK image presented with an audio file did nothing for me:

I assume the Pearson Longman people have worked out a white sheet is a really good ways to hold a 9 year old's attention. :P

Well I don't know if you're missing a CODEC on your system (that might yield sound but no video), but as far as:
So . . . Richmond gets a load of carpal tunnel syndrome downloading everything to bung on USB drives for the kiddos.
You could try pasting the site's URL into jDownloader which may be able to 'Slurp' the whole website to your downloads folder thus help avoid some carpal tunnel.
jDownloader is a tool I've used for ages now, it's open-source, written in Java.
Just make sure you uncheck Andy adware crap that might be in its installer: https://jdownloader.org

Thanks.

The point of my thread was not that (having a break from working with a chainsaw, so 'carpal' it ain't, just general w*nker's cramp).

My thread was a criticsm of P-L's crappy navigation round what for all intents and purposes looked like an xTalk stack embedded in a webpage.
